The New West Film Society began in 2011, when a group of environmentalists screened climate action documentaries to promote community engagement about environmental issues. In 2015, we expanded our annual documentary film festival to include narrative and experimental feature and short films. We are proud to be known as a “filmmakers festival”, because we promote films of strong local relevance, and present films from across Canada and around the world, that may not be seen on local New Westminster screens, or at other festivals.
New West Film Society flagship event is the NewWest FilmFest, an 3-day film festival held in October. We also create and contribute to film events throughout the year, including the April National Film Day Event, in partnership with the New Westminster Landmark Cinema and National Film Day. We also host local film quiz game nights, and pop up screenings around New Westminster throughout the year.
Over the years, we have partnered with a number of organizations, and been generously supported by local businesses, grass-roots organizations, the Arts Council of New Westminster, Green Ideas Network and New Westminster Environmental Partners.
New Westminster Film Society recognizes and acknowledges that our organization resides on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples of the Qayqayt and Kwikwetlem First Nations, for which we are very grateful.
